Happy October 🎃

Ever seen OR'd rule implementations and AND'd statements explained with the aid of a very specific pizza order? Neither had we, until we saw the first-ever episode of the new Spacelift podcast, missionCTRL, featuring Emin Alemdar and Joey Stout! We bring it to you in this edition of Mission Infrastructure, along with a video on how to migrate from Terraform Cloud, and popular recent articles on HCP Terraform Cloud renewal considerations, Terraform observability, IaC governance for new security leaders, and how to choose an AI infrastructure tool. Plus, we've got news of interesting events and our latest product updates.

New Articles — Top Picks

What Is Terraform Observability and How Does It Work?

Terraform observability involves collecting logs, metrics, and traces from every component involved in a Terraform run to answer why that run behaved the way it did and not just whether it passed. In this article, Mattias Fjellström explores how Terraform observability works and why you should care about it.

Before You Renew Your Terraform Cloud Contract

If you are approaching the renewal of your Terraform Cloud (HCP Terraform), you should pay particular attention because the product has changed names, owners, pricing models, and tier structure. In this article, Flavius Dinu outlines what changed, how pricing works today, the questions to ask before you sign, and what a migration looks like if you decide not to renew.

The New Security Leader's IaC Governance Playbook

IaC governance ensures your infrastructure code produces secure, compliant infrastructure that matches what you intended, before and after it deploys. In this article, David Galiata explores how to manage IaC governance deliberately, the four pillars to establish, how to sequence them, how to prove it’s working, and avoiding mistakes.

Top AI Infrastructure Tools and How to Choose the Right One

AI infrastructure tools provision and manage the combined stack of compute, storage, networking, and software used to develop, train, deploy, and operate AI models and agents. James Walker’s article covers seven categories of AI infrastructure tools, the platforms teams run in production today, and how to evaluate your options in each category.

The DevOps podcast that argues back

DevOps engineers Emin Alemdar and Joey Stout spend their days in the same IaC trenches as you do. On missionCTRL, they cut through the noise with unfiltered takes on the tools you use every week, defending their hot takes and debating what actually works in the real world.

missionCTRL ep. 1: Rego isn’t hard, you’re just thinking about it wrong

YT - Rego isn’t hard - v2

Spacelift solutions architects Emin Alemdar and Joey Stout take a closer look at Rego, the policy language at the center of Open Policy Agent (OPA), and why so many platform and DevOps engineers don’t like it. In the first episode of our new podcast, missionCTRL, they cover the real pronunciation of Rego and OPA, how Rego's rule blocks and statements actually evaluate, and why most misconceptions about Rego’s complexity come down to exposure, not difficulty.

missionCTRL ep. 2: Kubernetes: the good, the bad, the ugly

YT - missionCTRL ep 2

In episode two of missionCTRL, Emin and Joey share the stage with Kat Cosgrove, a member of the Kubernetes steering committee and the release lead behind the infamous "Uwubernetes" naming. They chat all things Kubernetes, what it does well, where it goes wrong, and where people misuse it entirely. You’ll hear why self-healing and portability are its key strengths, why you shouldn’t roll your own cluster or use Kubernetes when you don't need it, how the project handles documentation and AI-generated contributions, and whether we will ever see Kubernetes 2.0.

How to migrate from TFC to Spacelift

HashiCorp’s switch to a resources under management (RUM) pricing model means many teams are paying for resources TFC does not manage. When you factor in tooling lock-in, no native workspace dependencies, policy restrictions on lower tiers, and increasing doubt around the product direction since the BSL change and IBM acquisition, the case for switching becomes increasingly compelling. In this video, we walk through how to migrate from Terraform Cloud to Spacelift using liftoff, an AI-driven migration tool that exports your workspaces, generates the equivalent Spacelift configuration as OpenTofu, and migrates your state.

    Product Updates 🚀

    Introducing low run priority level

Runs on private worker pools now have three priority levels instead of two. Now, as well as being able to push a run priority up so that it is processed first, you can also push it down, so it waits behind everything at normal or higher levels.

    Run expiration changes in Spacelift

Any run that doesn't reach a final state within 30 days of creation will expire and be removed from the queue, including runs that are simply waiting for approval or confirmation. You should check the Runs to be Terminated widget on your Dashboard to see which runs will be expired within the next seven days.
